The Goodwood Legacy
Goodwood is committed to making a contribution to its community, and we do this by taking responsibility for the environmental impact of our business and working with both national and local charities to have a positive impact on others lives.
Environment and sustainability
Goodwood is responsible for the stewardship of approximately 12,000 acres. With this comes great responsibility to protect, maintain and enhance the character, setting and landscape for the enjoyment of future generations, without compromising their needs.
Perhaps uniquely for an estate of traditional origin, in addition to the core estate activities of farming, property management and forestry, we also run our hotel, club house, golf courses, horse racing, an airfield, motorsport and two major motorsport events ourselves. Our approach to sustainable activity therefore extends beyond the straightforward ownership of land and property, and has to embrace the activities and enterprise that we run ourselves.
We plan to improve our performance on matters relating to environmental impact, chiefly:
~ Reduce our demand on energy by good practice and monitoring
~ Reduce our demand on fossil fuels and choose clean energy where possible
~ Prevent waste, recycle and reuse energy from our refuse with the aim of zero waste to landfill
~ Purchase goods and services sustainably through our own and local suppliers, and demand sustainable credentials from those who provide for Goodwood
~ Manage our land and forestry using sustainable practises
~ Raise awareness of our intentions among our staff, contractors and tenants
Charity
Goodwood supports a variety of exceptional charities, raising money and awareness throughout the year. This is achieved by raising money on behalf of charities through our headline events and direct donations. Last year, we contributed over £500,000 to a range of local and national charities.
In 1976 we set up a charitable trust (The West Sussex Countryside Studies Trust) to provide educational opportunities primarily for school children. This has allowed us to host between 3000 – 3500 children visits per year, as well as providing a multitude of learning opportunities focusing on countryside studies whilst including the inherent culture and heritage at Goodwood, both modern and historic.
How our team help us to contribute
The Goodwood Charity: Our team are given the opportunity to select a charity of their choice to be supported by Goodwood, year-round, for 2 years. We work with this charity to provide maximum opportunities to get involved, whilst raising as much as we can for them.
Our team also enjoys supporting the community in which we live and work. Our links with local community projects provide opportunities to volunteer, to make a real difference. Our contributions have included decorating a day room at a children’s hospice, cooking and doing some DIY at a local homeless shelter.
One Offs: We also enjoy taking part in national events such as Jeans for Genes, Wear It Pink, Movember, Christmas jumper day, MacMillan Coffee Morning - we encourage everyone to have fun at work whilst raising money for important National causes.
