The Classic Mini 1275 GT (Clubman)
Most new cars receive a facelift about three and a half years into their lives, but the original Mini skipped that bit. By the late 60s, the then ageing – now iconic – design was in its third iteration. The Clubman was an attempt to rectify that.
How could they possibly predict that the original shape would see the new millennium? Internal ramblings of an entirely new car to replace the Mini were never far off, eventually coming to fruition in 1980 with the arrival of the Metro. But the Clubman was the first attempt to create a ‘grown-up’ alternative to the original of Sir Alec Issigonis.
A new, squarer front end with a longer bonnet defined the exterior look, borrowing parts from the Austin Maxi. Inside, it was plusher, and had a proper instrument panel for the first time in a Mini. It also took over duties as the performance-oriented Mini with the 1275 GT, featuring a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine developing 59PS (43kW), and sporty touches such as GT badging on the front grille and side stripes.
The original design remained on sale alongside the 1275 GT and 998cc versions of the Clubman, but without the 1,275cc Cooper S. It would carry on for another 20 years after the Clubman’s discontinuation in 1980.
