The Classic Audi TT

Launched in 1998 as an entirely new kind of car for Audi, the TT sold primarily because of the way it looked. The production car barely changed from the concept it was based upon, retaining the smooth surfacing and circular styling that came to define Audi in the early 2000s. Though Audi’s designers were forced to go back to the drawing board early in the car’s life, with the incorporation of a small rear spoiler for additional high-speed stability.

Though carrying a somewhat lethal reputation, the rare, early, wingless cars are still highly desirable. But virtually all Mk1 TTs can now be considered modern classics. It’s never been a car hailed for its driving dynamics though – in the premium two-seat sports car’s late 90s, early 2000s zeitgeist, the Audi was very much the style-conscious choice, not the enthusiasts.

If you love the looks but at least want some performance to go with them, the TT 3.2 quattro is the obvious place to start, featuring a 3.2-litre VR6 engine producing 250PS (184kW), and available with a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Four-cylinder versions using a turbocharged 1.8-litre engine were also available, but no rear-wheel-drive versions of the TT were offered – front-wheel-drive or quattro all-wheel-drive were the choices served up, steering many enthusiasts into the clutches of BMW with the Z3 over the TT’s charming appearance.
