The Classic Ford Escort Mk1
Ford sold over 1.5 million Anglias during the small family car’s lengthy production run. But the car that replaced it would go on to sell more than four million over four generations. The Escort, introduced in 1968, would not only be a smash hit with families, it also carved out a huge reputation for itself on the world rallying stage.
The Mk1 Escort was the first car launched under the newly unified Ford of Europe subsidiary, with right-hand-drive models for Britain produced in Halewood, Merseyside. The UK quickly became the car’s best market, though it was popular across Europe. Two million had been made by the halfway point of 1974, with around 60% of those cars made in Britain.
While it was a reliable set of wheels with which to get from point A to B, its practicality was further enhanced with the addition of four-door and estate options alongside the two-door saloon available from launch, the Mk1 Escort’s biggest fans love the car for its rallying pedigree.
Its incredible success in competition is allied to a number of exciting road-going versions that have taken on legendary status. The Escort Mexico was born after the car won the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, using an 86PS (63kW) 1.6-litre crossflow engine in a more rigid body to the regular Escort line-up. The Cosworth BDA engined RS1600 also used this body in combination with unique suspension, while the more road-friendly RS2000 used Ford’s legendary 2.0-litre Pinto overhead camshaft engine.
