Following the success of the Jeep in WW2, the Rover Company strived to create a British off-road, multi-purpose alternative. And so in 1948, the original Series 1 Land Rover, a future classic, was unveiled to the world at the Amsterdam Motor Show.

Fittingly designed on the family farm by Maurice Wilks, Chief Designer at the Rover Company, the Series 1 began life as the ‘centre steer’ or ‘mule’ prototype. Named after its centrally placed steering wheel; the design was bold in its simplicity. Born to ‘rove the land’, it immediately delighted the Rover Company.

After the British Army ordered a trial batch, and King George VI was shrewdly presented the 100^th Series 1, two cornerstones of British life would cement a long-term relationship with the go anywhere, do anything vehicle.

By 1949 Land Rovers were being exported to over 70 countries. Some seven decades later, the spirit of the Series 1 lives on. Evolving through long and short wheelbases, the Land Rover Series II and IIA, Land Rover Series III, Land Rover Series III V8, Land Rover 90, and into the modern era. From farmyards to royal estates, theatres of war to bustling city centres, this quintessentially British classic is a certified icon of motoring.
