The Classic Mini Mk1
Launched in 1959, the Mk1 Mini was the British Motor Corporation’s response to an increasing need for a small economical car for British families. Though its size was diminutive, it would go on to have a huge impact not just on the British car industry, but wider society and culture, too.
Barely more than three metres long, and with space for four, the car didn’t take on the Mini name in an official capacity until three years after its launch. An early example of a badge-engineered car, Austin and Morris versions were offered under the names Se7en and Mini-Minor, using an 848cc four-cylinder engine. In spite of the tiny capacity, it could still propel the Mini to a motorway-friendly top speed of 72mph.
Numerous packaging innovations made the Mini’s tiny footprint possible. The engine was mounted transversely – it wasn’t the first car to do this, but it was the first car to bring the idea to the masses. This was combined with front-wheel-drive and a gearbox mounted into the sump of the engine, meaning the car had no intrusive transmission tunnel and for maximum interior space.
The Mini was more than just a small family car though – it became an unlikely performance and motorsport icon. Formula 1 championship winning team owner John Cooper saw potential in a faster version of the Mini, creating the Mini Cooper in 1961. These more powerful sub-1.0-litre engine versions were supplanted by the Cooper ‘S’, initially offered with a 1,071cc engine (this version famously winning the 1964 Monte Carlo rally, driven by Paddy Hopkirk), before being uprated to a 1,275cc unit developing 77PS (57kW).
