The Classic Rover Mini
The last dance for the original Mini came in 1996, with the Mk7 version known colloquially as the Rover Mini. Produced until 2000, the final version made sure that the tiny icon bowed out with a flourish, after 41 years on sale.
In response to a changing customer profile for the Mini, the Rover Mini and its Cooper variants were more aspirational, sportier looking, and more upmarket than before. It was no longer a genuine family workhorse, or even a functional second car. It had become collectable and desirable in its own right as a fun, fashionable run-around.
It retained the classic shape, but the Rover Mini stands out for the Cooper version of the car, which was available with an optional ‘Sports Pack.’ This added 13-inch versions of the car’s iconic Minilite wheels, and distinctive wide arches, to give the car its sportiest appearance yet.
Along with a modernised interior borrowing and airbag steering wheel from the MG F, all versions of the final Mini used a 1.3-litre multi-point fuel-injected four-cylinder engine, developing 63PS (46kW) in Cooper versions of the car. Later models with optional John Cooper Works conversion kits equipped, deploying up to 90PS (66kW) are rare finds, as are Cooper S Touring and Cooper S Sport 5 versions with a shortly-lived five-speed manual gearbox.
