August pick of the season
The gooseberry season runs from June to August in the British climate. The early season 'green' gooseberry is best for cooking; crush them into a gooseberry compote or poach them to accompany your barbecued mackerel. Later comes the delicious dessert gooseberry, sweet enough to be eaten raw. Try adding them into your summer salads.
Gooseberry facts:
- They are a good source of fibre plus vitamins A and C
- Gooseberries were first cultivated in Britain in the sixteenth century when they were used medicinally to treat plague victims in London
- The whole European crop was wiped out in 1905 due to a mildew disease that travelled over from America.
