Low impact – The low impact nature of swimming means that it is the perfect exercise for achy muscles and sore joints. When submerged in water you automatically becomes lighter, meaning that you are putting less strain and pressure on your body as a whole.
Increase muscle strength – Swimming is great for muscular strength as your body faces the resistance of the water with every stroke you do. The density of the water acts the same as light weight training in the gym.
Improve flexibility – Unlike exercise machines in the gym, swimming puts the body through a broad range of motion that helps joints and ligaments to stay loose and flexible. The arms move in wide arcs, the hips are engaged as the legs scissor through the water, and the head and spine twist from side to side.
Healthier heart – In swimming, if you’re not moving then you are most likely sinking! It’s forced cardio and with the resistance against water, you are also working on toning those muscles. Aim for 20 lengths each time you swim and you’ll begin to see an improvement in your cardiovascular system.
Weight control - Swimming is recognised as one of the biggest calorie burners around, and it's great for keeping weight under control. To boost the calorie-burning component of swimming, consider using intervals in which you work your hardest for short bursts and then recover.
