Marathon Match – Saturday 11 March – The Downs Course:
Thank you and well done to all those who competed in the Marathon Match against Cowdray Park Golf Club.
This year’s event was different to previous years, as the event will only been played over one leg due to Cowdray having major course maintenance at the time of the second leg. his meant for the first time, there was a draw to determine which course the members were due to play at. We very much appreciate all the members’ understanding and flexibility with this.
We were very happy to have full tee sheets at both courses. For those who do not know, any tee time we are unable to fill, we instantly lose 10 points to the opposition so having a full field is a big positive for the event. The overall result for today, which are the final results to the 2023 Marathon Match, were as follows:
82 |
GOLF AT GOODWOOD |
COWDRAY GOLF |
60 |
The first tee times from 8:00 - 12:00 were played at Goodwood and the later 8:00 - 12:20 tee times were played at Cowdray.
The results for our on course nearest the pins are:
8th Hole | Ladies | Vicky Lush |
17th Hole | Men's | Mark Upton |
17th Hole | Men's | John Flinders |
As much of a shame as it is to only run the one event this year, we are pleased to say we will be returning to normality with both a Spring and Autumn leg next year.

The Interclub Matchplay Results - Saturday 25 March - The Downs Course
Thank you and well done to all those who played in the Interclub Matchplay. The event was played between the five different competitive teams; Scratch, Junior, Birchwood, Ladies and Cyril Blake.
The teams of eight players were divided into four pairs and mixed up against each other. All matches were played over 18 holes in a Betterball Matchplay format. The overall result of each match was then converted into points for the team. For example, if a match between the ladies and juniors finished with the Ladies winning two up on the 18th, this converts to two points for the ladies team.
In what was tough, wet and windy conditions that seemed to get worse as the day went on, all the members battled through and managed to finish the full 18 holes.
The matches were all rather close after 9 holes but once the rain came in it seemed to wear down some teams and allowed they to break away for the win.
Congratulations to the Junior team who won overall, the full result can be seen below:
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Total | |
Scratch | 0 | 1 | N/A | N/A | 1 |
Junior | 3 | 4 | 0 | 2 | 9 |
Birchwood | 1 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 5 |
Ladies | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 |
Cyril Blake | 0 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 5 |
