This Mégane is rather more than that though. Like the R26.R I've wittered on about here before the Trophy-R is the customer version of the car that set the 'ring lap and, unlike recent records by SEAT, Honda and VW, you could actually buy an identical car to the one Renault's driver Laurent Hurgon set the record with. Meaning the only thing stopping you doing the same were your own limitations. And the determination to spec a Mégane up to nearly £40K, up to and including the £1,995 Nürburgring Pack with its 16kg lighter lithium ion battery, harnesses and uprated brakes.
I think that's rather cool.
This one is the only example I could find for sale – looks something of a bargain at £27K, given just 30 were officially sold in the UK and at a starting price of £36,430. That makes it much rarer than the R26.R, for which prices are firming now. Hard to say whether this represents the price bottoming out for the Trophy-R but given the news the last Mégane III Renault Sport has now left the line it doesn't sound like silly money and a safe bet for holding it. This one has the desirable Liquid Yellow paint – a £1,300 option – and lovely 19-inch Speedline Turini wheels (another 5kg saved!) but doesn't have the Nürburgring Pack or the Cup 2 tyres used to set the record. I could live with that I think and would take the Mégane over the Golf any day – it may have lost its crown but the handling is just so much more alert, adjustable and exciting than the VW.
Don't bother wrapping it…
