Abarth 695 Biposto banishes back‑seat drivers

Abarth 695 Biposto

We’re agreed that everything sounds better in Italian, right? ‘Four door’ sounds prosaic, ‘Quattroporte’ has a resonance. It’s the same with the new Abarth 695 Biposto, which tells you that the rear seat of the fastest-ever Abarth have been removed to leave it a two-seater.

We’ve seen stripped-out, hardcore hatchbacks before – step forward Mini JCW GP and Renault Megane R26.R. The Biposto follows in the tradition… big bucket seats, a titanium rollcage and a racecar style digital dash all feature. Also, how cool is that exposed gear linkage mechanism? It’s not just for show, either. It’s connected to a dog-engagement gearbox. An LSD completes the transmission – that combination is apparently a first for a road-legal car.

The Biposto has a 187bhp turbocharged 1.4-litre engine, which has enough go to propel the car to 62mph in 5.9sec and on to 143mph. It’s helped by a dry weight of just 997kg. Big brakes and tuned suspension complete the specification, and all the additions to the 695’s spec (not to mention the subtractions) result in a to-be-confirmed list price of around £40,000.

The Biposto has already been in action on the hill today, and you’ll see it officially during the Festival of Speed in the First Glance category. If you’re here for it, you’ll discover the listening to the 695 is just as important as that glance…
