We love to see an Indycar at FoS, and what could be better than an Indycar driven by a former Indy 500 winner who has cemented his place in Goodwood folklore?
Although not a car instantly recognised on this side of the pond, this Lola T500 is somewhat more famous Stateside as the car used by Al Unser to win his third Indianapolis 500. It has the further distinction of being the first car to win at Indianapolis with a derivative of the fabled Cosworth DFV V8 which made its debut in Grand Prix racing a decade earlier.
The race itself was one of attrition due to the unusually high ambient temperature at the Brickyard that year, and despite holding a healthy lead at one stage, Unser had to work hard in the closing laps to hold-off a charging Tom Sneva after damaging his wing during a pit stop and losing grip.
Sadly ‘Big Al’ won’t be behind the wheel at FoS, but the man taking his place is the ever-popular Kenny Brack, whose performance in Adran Newey’s Ford GT40 at the Revival meeting last September has become the stuff of legend. Just in case you haven’t seen it yet, we’d urge you to take a look at his heroics on a damp track here.
Oh what we’d give to see him do similar with the T500 at FoS. We’ll find out in just over a fortnight’s time!
