A host of significant historic M-Bs is currently being preened and prepared for the Festival of Speed. The German marque is the focus of the central display as we celebrate 120 years of its motorsport activities, and it’s being celebrated in a big way: cars as varied as the 1914 Mercedes Grand Prix car to the Sauber-Mercedes Group C car will be in action – in fact 16 cars are being trucked over from the museum in Germany to help make sure the anniversary doesn’t go unnoticed.

But one car that will be absent from the celebrations is the 300SL road car. Launched in 1954, two years after the competition version, it celebrates its 60th anniversary this year (but you were probably ahead of us on the maths!). It’s an anniversary we couldn’t let slip by, so what better than to bring one to Goodwood and have a proper look at it?
Even after 60 years, the Gullwing remains one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Click on the video to indulge in the sight and sound of this wonderful machine.
