There’s no doubting the spectacle that pro drifter Mad Mike Whiddett created when he came to last year’s Festival of Speed – he was clearly a crowd favourite, and scooped the award for outstanding performance after this consistently smokey, sideways displays. He has confirmed via Twitter that he will be accepting his invitation from Lord March to return this year.
But as well as making his own mark on Goodwood (black ones, more or less along the entire length of the hillclimb course), the event also made quite an impression on him. In his Speedhunters blog, posted after 2014’s event, he said: ‘I was probably near first to arrive and last to leave Goodwood every day… No event comes close to the atmosphere of this place.’
Alongside such exalted company as F1 drivers, Le Mans legends and WRC champions, Mike put on the kind of spectacular display you’d expect of a top-level drifter. ‘With only two runs per day for each driver, there was no way I was going to cruise up the driveway to ‘feel it out’ with 150,000 sets of eyes on the track. I was 100 per cent focused, and being behind the wheel of Madbul I felt totally confident. I laughed to myself on the first run when I saw the marshals at the Malcome corner jumping for cover over the bales. I’m guessing that none of them had ever seen anyone fly through there fully sideways!’
