At the dot of 8.30 this morning, Lord March declared day one of the 2015 Festival of Speed – the Moving Motor Show presented by the AA – open by driving a rather special new car up the famous hill.
The honour of being first car up fell this year to the all-new Mazda MX-5, the all-new two-seat roadster that’s the latest in a distinguished line that stretches back 25 years.
GRR wanted a quick road test of the new model from Lord March. ‘I haven’t driven it yet,’ he told us, before he got behind the wheel. ‘But I am looking forward to it immensely.
‘I think this new model looks great. The MX-5 has been such a fabulously popular car, especially in the UK. For driving with the top down it’s always delivered and it’s always been such a lovely car to drive, with such good steering.
‘It’s incredible to think the MX-5 has been out for 25 years now, and from what I read of the new one (you can see our first drive story here) it is better than ever. I am really looking forward to have a go in it.’
And how fast would that be? ‘Very fast.’ Yup, FoS 2015 is now open!
You too can follow in Lord March’s wheeltracks up the 1.16-mile hill today (Thursday). Mazda has five of the roadsters taking part in the Moving Motor Show and, as this is written, there are still some places available but you must register first at the Mazda stand in the show hall (by the start line).
