A couple of touring car legends dropped in at the Moving Motor Show at FoS today.
Honda drivers Matt Neal and ‘Flash’ Gordon Shedden, former BTCC champs both and currently lying second and third in the championship, were there on driving duties for Honda, giving FoS visitors a ride to remember in the new hot hatch of the moment, the Honda Type R.
How is the 310ps front-driver handling the hillclimb? ‘Brilliantly well,’ Matt told us.
And the view from the passenger seat? GRR tracked down one of the first to get a ride with Matt, Martin O’Neill, to see what he thought of the car.
Turns out Martin has already ordered a Type R – without yet having driven it. His verdict?
‘First thing to say is that Matt Neal is a really nice guy,’ Martin, who has been to each and every FoS since the beginning, told us.
And the car? ‘It feels really good and pulls well. Matt was going pretty quick and the acceleration felt very good.’
Type Rs are a new thing for Martin. What attracted him to it? ‘I like cars that are a bit over the top. We saw the concept here at FoS last year and loved it, with all its aero bits and quad exhausts. I find it frustrating when the magazines call these cars lairy and over the top, that’s what I love about them! Other hot hatches like the Golf R are too understated for me.’
Martin said he is due to get his new car on 9 July. ‘That really surprised Matt,’ he told us, ‘because he doesn’t get his until well after that!’
