This has to be the logical conclusion to the horsepower wars, before it all becomes entirely irrelevant with electric power, right? The 843PS (620kW) Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance deploys via its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 and supplementary electric power to all four wheels, generating performance that surely can’t be topped.

Is the Mercedes‑AMG GT63 the pinnacle of the power wars?
We’re probably wrong but it’s starting to feel a little absurd that this Mercedes four-door coupe has more power than any McLaren currently in production. Yet in the right colour (not this green) it’s understated. Driven softly in the right mode, it’s comfortable. It’s somewhat practical too with four half-decent seats and a big boot.
This is a four-door hypercar, according to the numbers, which show it getting to 62mph in a frankly mystical 2.9 seconds. Okay, the practical side of it is appealing too. If you find yourself burbling into the city, you can switch the engine off and use the battery for up to seven miles of electric driving. Needless to say, there was no silent motoring at the 2022 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. It was all AMG guns blazing and, at points, drifting.
The crux is the price. This is a £173,655 car, without that fancy green paint. For some, anything but the ultimate high-performance Mercedes won’t do, so it’s a price worth paying. It’s certainly a force to be reckoned with on the Hill.
