Flying Dutchman swaps his Sauber for a Cobra at Revival
A raw and brutal AC Cobra may be a world away from the clinical, high-tech world of modern Formula One, but it’s a step that current Sauber test driver and former Caterham F1 racer Giedo van der Garde will take for his first appearance at the Goodwood Revival. He’ll be on the grid of the RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration Race, run for closed cockpit cars from 1960 to ’64.
He will share the drive with the car’s owner David Hart, a regular at the Revival who’s often found at the sharp end of the grid. In last year’s Tourist Trophy, he and World Touring Car race-winning co-driver Tom Coronel finished fourth overall. David Hart will also race a Lola T70 Spyder in the Whitsun Trophy, in which he will seek to improve on last year’s sixth place when he was partnered with Hans Hugenholtz.
While this will be Giedo van der Garde’s first time at the Revival, we have seen him at Goodwood before; he drove Caterham F1 cars at the Festival of Speed in 2011 and 2012. He’s looking forward to stepping back in time, automotively-speaking: “You can’t slide a modern Formula One car and still be fast, but the Cobra was made to go sideways,” he reckons. Top stuff!
