V8s out in force for Shelby Cup

This year’s Goodwood Revival promises thunder aplenty in the two-driver Shelby Cup race, when a capacity grid of 30 cars is expected to honour one of the great American contributions to motorsport; the small block V8.

American V8s have found homes in the likes of GT40s, Lola T70s, and Lister Knobblys, but the Shelby cup will feature these powerful V8s in their natural habitat, which will see a grid bursting with Mustangs, Falcons, Barracudas and so on, all of pre-’66 vintage.

Touring car ace and Methuen house captain Anthony Reid is certainly looking forward to the occasion. ‘This is a fabulous race to be involved with’ he says. ‘It’s going to be one of the highlights of the weekend. These cars are great fun to drive. They’re really chuckable and in race trim the brakes actually work! This sort of thing could only happen at Goodwood.’

Reid will be joined by a number of other top drivers, namely his fellow house captains Nic Minassian, Jochen Mass, and Emanuele Pirro, and contemporary touring car drivers Matt Neal, Mat Jackson, Gordon Shedden, and Tom Chilton.

The 45 minute race will be held on the Saturday, with a mid-distance pitstop to allow for the driver swap. The sight and sound of these V8 monsters thundering around Goodwood in the hands of so many spectacular drivers is not to be missed.
