World renowned portrait photographer Uli Weber will launch his second book, which contains 106 colour images from the Goodwood Revival, at this year’s event. Uli’s portraits have been seen in esteemed publications such as Vogue, Elle and the Sunday Times, and also in venues including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Saatchi Gallery. His portfolio includes names like Placido Domingo, Helena Bonham Carter and Robbie Williams.
“More than capturing just the highlight moments, Uli has also caught the moments of frivolity, the silent determination on drivers’ faces and the exhilaration of victory”
But he swapped Kate Moss for Stirling Moss and the catwalk for the gridwalk when he was given all-areas access to the Goodwood Revival over a four-day period during the 2012 and 2013 events. ‘It all started with a portrait I took of Lord March,’ said Uli. ‘I gave him a book I had previously published and was then asked to come to Revival as a guest. It is such a photogenic event and I ended up taking some pictures. From there, Lord March asked me to come the following year to cover it more fully – the end result is the collection of pictures we are releasing in September.’
More than capturing just the highlight moments, Uli has also caught the moments of frivolity, the silent determination on drivers’ faces and the exhilaration of victory. ‘It actually took me back to my roots: it’s pure photography. As my career has grown I’ve done more portraits, fashion and commercial work, but this is all about just being in the right place at the right time and doing all you can to get the shot,’ says Uli. ‘This means being there for all the high-profile ‘moments’, but also going against the grain and capturing the sections with less fanfare too. You want to capture these magnificent machines looking their best, but also capture the essence.’
In the same way that the Revival itself is about more than just motor racing, so this collection of images is of interest beyond the motorsport fraternity. Lovers of photography, fashionistas and fans of nostalgia will all find plenty to enjoy. The 106 photopgraphs are contained within 204 pages of 26cm by 35cm in size. The RRP is £39. Both Uli Weber and Lord March will be signing copies at the Revival, where the book is being launched.
