It was lucky for the drivers in the Chichester Cup that the race took place on the sunny Sunday rather than the wet Saturday. But clear skies and a crisp dry track don’t keep calamity at bay for long.

Video: High speed offroad slide in the Chichester Cup
Dry conditions only mean higher limits, and more speed and smoke when it goes pear-shaped. That’s exactly what happened to Mark Woodhouse in the number 2 Elva-BMC. As we can see in the video above, he comes round at a fair pace, before topping the crest and cocking a rear wheel onto the grass. Before you can say “no traction control”, the car is sideways – almost backwards – smoking onto the grass in an epic slide. Commentators curse indeed!
