Father and son Philip and Matthew Holme have had a busy fortnight leading up the 72MM. Two weeks ago, during testing at the Goodwood circuit, their 1957 Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS dropped a valve. Philip has been busily rebuilding the engine and fitting a new differential since, and even yesterday morning he was working on the car’s brakes. “It’s been a bit last minute,” says Matthew. “Anything other than last will be a good result,” he added prior to the qualifying session.
The car is believed to be the only Alfa 1900 with FIA papers in Europe. CSS denotes that it’s a Corse Super Sprint, although Philip quips that he’d prefer it to be a Superlegerra. The car has been in the Holme family for six years and future plans include getting on the road in order to take part in the Mille Miglia road rally. For this weekend, though, the only goal is to achieve reliability during qualifying and the race. Good luck, chaps!
