The only Lotus ever bought by pioneering company founder Colin Chapman, is to race at the Goodwood 73rd Members Meeting.
Classic Team Lotus – headed by the legendary designer’s son, Clive – will field the Ford-engined Lotus 18 in the Taylor Trophy for rear-engined, drum-braked Formula Junior single-seaters that raced from 1959-62.
The car in question spent its four-year racing life in Denmark, before being bought by Chapman Sr to include in Lotus’s private collection. Sadly, it would languish in a storage building for over 35 years before Classic Team Lotus retrieved and lovingly restored it, in 2001.
Long-time Lotus aficionado Dan Collins, who won the 2009 FIA Lurani Trophy in the car, will race it at Goodwood.
The Chapman Lotus is not the only car with a rich heritage to have been signed-up for the event – held in honour of Trevor Taylor, a national Formula Junior champion in 1960-61 with Team Lotus and a Formula 1 podium finisher with the team at the 1962 Dutch GP.
Sportscar legend Jo Siffert’s Lotus 20, the first car he ever owned and the one in which he claimed the 1961 European Formula Junior title, will be driven by Lance Whitehead, while an ultra-rare Ausper T3 – raced by future Hesketh F1 team manager Anthony ‘Bubbles’ Horsley – will be driven by Alex Morton.
A sensational BMC-engined Elva 200, which was raced by 1972 Indy 500 winner Mark Donohue and two-time grand prix victor Peter Revson in North American competition during the early days of their careers, will feature with James Owen at the wheel while the unique Envoy Mk2 will be driven by Andrew Hayden.
The Gemini Mk3A in which future Ferrari Formula 1 driver Mike Parkes won the John Davy Trophy in 1961, will also take part – sporting the colours it bore on its race debut in the hands of Graham Warner’s Chequered Flag Racing team.
With representation from Cooper, Condor, Emeryson, De Sanctis, Sauter, Facioli, Kieft, Deep Sanderson, Jolus, De Tomaso, Volpini, RAM, Caravelle, PBA, Tojeiro and Lynx close racing and exciting action can be guaranteed.
The race is schedule to take place on the Saturday afternoon of the 73rd Members’ Meeting and all historic motor sport enthusiasts are welcome.
