Welcome to the morning after the night before! Yes, it was quite a party after a day of such spectacular on-track action at the 73rd Members’ Meeting.
With Sunday dawning bright and dry – and mercifully a few degrees warmer than Saturday – all is set for a day of action-packed historic racing. Once the coffee starts to flow and the partygoers’ heads from last night have cleared.
No such problems for GRR’s own two drivers of course. We’re sure that Chris Harris and Andrew Frankel, sharing a VW campervan, had an early night in together…
But then the temptations of the free Saturday night party were difficult to resist. Like the inaugural party that so blew visitors away at the 72nd Members’ Meeting last year, this weekend’s celebrations started with a beat (thank you Batala Drummers!) and ended with a bang. A big bang. No one does fireworks like Goodwood!
Highlights in between? For some it was food and drink in the Great Hall, for others a nightcap standing around one of the crackling fire pits. Hundreds packed the live music venues while others sampled the delights of the many and varied food and drinks outlets (more than last year you’ll be pleased to hear).
For kids (and, apparently, one Patrick Head…) the funfair proved the most appealing, though we at GRR would have thought that the Wall of Death would have been more to Mr Head’s taste than the Helter Skelter that he was actually spotted on!
As ever, the Goodwood ‘twist’ was to the fore. Where else would you expect to see a singing nun, a ‘live’ jukebox (well, we hope the people inside the box were alive…), two chaps punting along on dry land and all manner of street entertainers, singers and dancers.
As someone tweeted, ‘It was a pinch me sort of day’.
And now to the motor racing!
