Working as a photographer at Goodwood is always special. At these events so many unique motorsport moments are happening; all over the grounds, all of the time, that it is often simply overwhelming. And when working for Goodwood you can’t help but feel the responsibility to search, find and capture as many of these moments as possible, or else they flutter before the eyes of a few lucky ones, to then be lost forever.
I was very excited about the McLaren F1 GTR demonstration at the 73MM and when I saw crowd favourite Kenny Brack in the assembly area on Saturday, I knew we would be in for a treat. Then I spotted Steve Soper sitting behind the wheel of his own Fina long-tail GTR and his concentration was palpable.
So when they met on track and battled it out over several laps it felt like it had all come together and I was witnessing a new piece of Goodwood history. Luckily, I was well prepared and able to capture this moment in the way it deserved. So – as much as it feels unfair to so many other moments I felt privileged to witness at the weekend – I remember that duel as my favourite of the event.
Other highlights include seeing fellow Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne take the McLaren M23 up to a more than respectable speed, a pair of Silk Cut Jaguar Group C cars going flat out past the pit straight, the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe roaring through the dark and the lovely atmosphere at the Salvadori Cup, which finished off the event in style. Now I’ve heard Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner are coming to join the party at the Festival, I am looking forward to it already, and hope to see you there!
