With their unique combination of spindly chassis, massive aero engines, rock-hard skinny tyres, suspect brakes and intrepid, perched-up-high ‘pilots’, the Edwardian cars that contested the inaugural S.F. Edge Trophy at the 74th Members’ Meeting wowed the crowds and gained a whole new fan base at the Motor Circuit back in March.

Edwardian Leviathans Back on Members’ Meeting Bill for 2017
So popular were these deceptively rapid and highly entertaining veterans in fact, they simply had to be invited back for the 75th Members’ Meeting – the fourth of the retrospective events that evoke the BARC events that made up the bulk of Goodwood’s action in period.
And that’s exactly what’s happened. A full grid of these remarkable racers, many of which are more than 100 years old, will once again engage in spirited combat for the S.F. Edge Trophy – named after the Australian-born British racer and speed-record holder Selwyn Francis Edge.

What’s guaranteed is another superb David-and-Goliath scrap between cars of all shapes, sizes, ages, and power outputs. In 2016, the diminutive GN Curtiss of Duncan Pittaway, well-known to Festival of Speed visitors for his exploits in the extraordinary, flame-spitting Fiat S76, battled with the huge V12-powered Delage of Mathias Sielecki, the pair separated by just 0.2s after the eight-lap race. Polesitter Julian Majzub, who wrestled the original 4.9-litre Sunbeam Indianapolis to third place, was a few seconds adrift of the leading pair.
More of the same please, chaps!
