Storming starts from Duncan Pittaway in a Bugatti Type 35 and Christopher Mann’s Alfa Romeo 8C 2600 Monza pushed pole sitter Patrick Blakeney-Edwards in his Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza to third at the entry to Madgwick before Blakeney-Edwards regained the lead. The Bugatti, its bonnet beginning to come adrift was sandwiched between the two Alfa Romeos.

Stephen Gentry overcooked it while chasing the top three, sending the Bugatti Type 51 into the tyre wall. As Blakeney-Edwards extended his lead, great entertainment was provided by a three-way Gallic battle for 16th between John Guyatt in a Talbot-Lago T150C, Paul-Emile Bessade’s Delage D5-70 Special and Vinect Tourneur in the Delahaye 135S.
Losing the bonnet entirely failed to faze Pittaway but Blakeney-Edwards continued to pull away from the field at great pace, leading by 6.6 seconds at the end of lap five. Christopher Mann’s excessively smoky retirement with five minutes to go handed third place to Alistair Pugh’s Frazer Nash BMW, hotly pursued by the Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza of Max Werner. Werner snatched the place entering Madgwick on the final lap to take the final podium place behind Pittaway and Blakeney-Edwards.
