Nimbleness versus grunt was the theme of the Guards Trophy GT race. Lotus Elans vied with Chevrolet Corvettes and AC Cobras, and the promise of exciting racing was carried into reality. Paul Tooms, in his dark blue Lotus Elan, outdragged Mike Whitaker’s TVR Griffith at the start, but the extra power of the V8 enabled Mike to retake the lead. The pair then battled for the rest of the race, remaining in position even through the pit stop. Both showed total determination and commitment as they three-wheeled through Club.
Carving their way through slower traffic, the 1-2 was maintained and, as the final lap began, it looked to be a done deal. However, with fading tyres Mike struggled to maintain the line on the last lap and Paul seized the opportunity to slip past and take the flag. Muscle gained some additional kudos with Craig Davies securing third place in the 6600cc Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Further down the order battles between E-Types, MGBs Jensen 541r, Sunbeam Tiger, Marcos and a brace of Turners kept the interest flowing. For many this had been the race of the day.
