Battles between the likes of John Cleland and Patrick Watts are what many remember from the Super Touring days of the BTCC. Despite the passage of time, both John and Patrick are still ‘racers’ at heart and were in act their first and second positions in the first race showed they’d lost none of skills to get to the front and stay there, although it was a late driveshaft failure for the Honda Accord of James Dodd that handed John his victory. All were up against competition from 1980s touring cars, like Sierra Cosworths and BMW E30s.
The Renault Laguna that has reappeared in this series has an interesting history. Having originally been fettled by Williams Engineering, it was returned to them in late 1999 and languished in storage for six years. In 2007 it re-appeared in the Serbian Touring Car Championship and stayed racing in that region for several years. In late 2013 it was purchased by its current driver Simon Garrad, and is now featuring in the Super Touring Cars series.
