Is there a more evocative sight than watching GT cars racing as the sun sets? That was the scene at the Nürburgring yesterday. The race may have been only an hour long, but the Gentlemen Drivers event at the Oldtimer GP conjured images endurance races of the past. The race is for GT cars up the 1965, and the Gentlemen Drivers title may be a bit of a misnomer; there are some pro or, at the very least, semi-pro drivers on the entry list.
When the chequered flag fell, it was good news for Brits, with all podium positions taken by Britsh crews in British cars. In first was Martin O’ Connell’s Jaguar E-type, followed home by the TVR Griffith of Sean McInerney and the AC Cobra 289 of Andrew Haddon. In fact, the only non-British car in the top 10 was the Chevrolet Corvette of Palle Birkelund Pedersen from Denmark.
Further down the grid, cars that caught our eye included the lovely Alfa Romeo TZ, a Ferrari 250 SWB that caught the evening light beautifully and a thumping Bizzarini 5300 GT. Enjoy the gallery above, and watch the sun set in pictures.
