Ex‑works Jaguar D‑Type: What are we bid?

At its January sale in Arizona, RM Sothebys will be selling by auction a rather special D-Type Jaguar.

For some time now any D-Type coming to auction has been big news, regardless of its provenance, and this one is a bit special. Firstly, it was driven by the legendary Mike Hawthorn in practice for the Silverstone Daily Express race in 1956, which is pretty big news. Also it was the first works racer built for 1956, which is another major tick in the box.

Thirdly, and possibly of even greater significance than the car’s link with Britain’s first Formula One World Champion and the factory racing effort, is the fact that XKD604 was the first D-Type built with De-Dion rear suspension and fuel injection. That exotic (for 1956) method of fuel delivery was abandoned before the car first hit the track, but still …

So what we have here is a long-nosed, finned ex-works D-Type with Jaguar’s first ever De-Dion back end and fuel injection set up, as driven by Mike Hawthorn. Those key points will likely have many aspiring D-Type owners on tenterhooks. The car had to be rebuilt after a major crash which prevented it from appearing at Le Mans, so it’s unlikely to match the price of the most desirable D-Types.

Then again, the market shows no signs of slowing up, so who knows? Oh if only we had two and a half million quid to bid with …
