It’s hard to imagine looking at Goodwood today that it could quite reasonably have ended up featuring in this ebook showing the ‘lost race circuits of Europe.’
As it is, in the early-nineties Lord March embarked on a wildly ambitious and, ultimately successful, plan to create the Festival of Speed and subsequently repair and re-open the circuit, which now holds two of the world’s finest historic racing events. From 1966 until then though, Goodwood ranked with some of the less-loved venues shown in Autodrome.
As glad as we are that Goodwood is back to rude health, there can be something compelling and beautiful about images of decaying racing circuits which once were alive with noise and colour. Autodrome takes us on a photographic tour of Europe’s forgotten racing venues, like Reims, Crystal Palace, Avus, Monthlery and Keimola for example.
Gavin D. Ireland has produced some mesmeric photography of the circuits, but the ebook also contains track diagrams showing how the circuits evolved, period photos of the venues in their heyday and even event posters and programme covers. Also, for those keen to support a venue, there are details of existing campaigns to save them.
