Spa Classic saw the Group C racers that wowed the 73rd Members’ Meeting return to flat-out racing action.
The incredible grid included some of the greatest names of the era: Spice, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Jaguar were all represented. Incredibly, thirty years after it ran in period, a Spice SE90 GTP took pole, with a time that would have seen it qualify 13th for last year’s grand prix.
Sadly the mighty Jaguar XJR-14 was unable to take part in the race, after suffering mechanical gremlins during the second qualifying session. But, even without it, an hour of roaring and screaming Group Cs fired round the Spa circuit was enough to set the senses to overdrive.
Group C stalwart Bob Berridge claimed victory, managing 25 laps on his own in an incredibly rare IMSA specification Nissan RC93, chased down by Steve (father of Porsche LMP1 racer Nick) Tandy and Mike Simpson in the Spice in second and current WEC racer Rui Aguas third in the Mercedes C11 alongside Kriton Lendoudis.
