It’s the Molina Monza – surely the best looking car ever to come out of Australia. It may be coming out of Australia too since this one-off 1957 Repco Holden-powered special is up for auction in Melbourne on 27 November.
It nearly came here once before – when it was invited to take part in the Sussex Trophy in 2013 – but never made it was still being restored at the time. Now, after AU$150,000 worth of work, it is said to be ready to race again, and Aussie auctioneers Mossgreen are confident the car will be eligible for historic racing worldwide – and that “it could be competitive against the best factory racing cars of its category.”
Was it competitive in period? The Monza special certainly raced a lot in the late 1950s, including at Australian Grand Prix meetings. There's short film of it in action above, though it may not be what you are expecting. It’s a clip of the car in a race sequence from what is meant to be Phillip Island taken from the 1959 movie On The Beach, Nevil Shute’s post apocalyptic take on an Australia whose time is rapidly running out after a nuclear war.
