How many elements can combine to make a car iconic? There’s the looks, then the sound, if it raced the drivers can make the difference and then sometimes it’s just down to success. But what if there’s a car that had all of these? What’s the definition that car’s status? Super-iconic? Is it a hyper-icon?
Video: Nine minutes of Ferrari 550 Prodrive awesome‑ness
I ask because the Ferrari 550 Prodrive looks incredible, sounds amazing with its big V12 engine and was driven by Colin McRae at Le Mans of all places. So it’s almost unquantifiably cool as far as we are concerned.
Of course most of us will never find out what it’s like to drive something so irritatingly awesome, so the closest we come is either seeing them on track, or getting hold of onboard footage. Thankfully our friends at Peter Auto, who run the Le Mans Classic, have some of that footage ready for us, and it’s right from the place that made the car most famous: Le Mans.
This is nine minutes of pure joy, a couple of laps of La Sarthe behind the wheel of a Ferrari 550 Maranello GT1 car and it’ll definitely sort us out while we have a brew this morning.
