There’s always an office debate around Goodwood events about whether it’s better to have a wet track or not. On the one hand, a dry circuit produces closer and more intense racing, but a bit of surface moisture will always result in some hair-raising drama. Arguments aside, one motorsport discipline that certainly does benefit from a soggy road one of our favourites – the hillclimb.
Video: Sensational sideways hillclimb action in torrential rain
Every time we see a hillclimb video, there seems to be a strong correlation between our enjoyment and how crap the cars are. If you share this preference, boy do we have seven minutes of heaven for you. It starts off a little bit too good with a large winged Porsche 911, however, before long we’re well into our stride with a Peugeot 205 and a struggling Nissan R35. We don’t want to see heavy downforce kissing apexes. We want to see BMW E36s entering a corner way too fast and styling it out with a heavy foot. That’s the real spirit of a hillclimb.
Maybe we’re trying to cling onto our memories of the ‘90s French rallies, but a wet twisty Southern European hillclimb is one of life’s great pleasures.
