In 2019 that took the shape of putting two-time BTCC champion John Cleland in a Volvo PV544 racing in the St. Mary’s Trophy.
Yes, that’s a rather bullish Scottish racing driver, in a Volvo that looks a little bit like a beetle. This being John Cleland though, he wasn’t going to let the apparent complete lack of motorsport credentials of his steed hold him back. A not-so-great start is soon followed by a lot of close on track battling, including a tight tussle with the Austin A40 of Andrew Jordan – a car that’s often right at the front of the field.
It’s a strange combination, but you know what, we kinda like it. And next year’s St. Mary’s Trophy will be the 1950s cars, so we’d better start thinking who we can put in a Volvo.
