Goodwood marshal Steve Tarrant is about to embark on a 24-hour endurance marathon to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support. He’s aiming to claim the Guinness World Record for the greatest distance travelled on a mobility scooter in 24 hours, and he’ll be using a special 300-metre course set up in one of the paddocks here at the circuit.
Steve actually completed a record attempt previously, in which he covered over 170 miles – but the attempt was disqualified on a technicality; the track hadn’t been surveyed before the attempt. Since then, the record has gone to America – so Steve is keen to bring it back to Britain.
At a speed of 10mph, it’s theoretically possible to cover 215 miles once stops for battery changes and other necessities have been factored in. He will start his 24-hour drive at 6pm tomorrow (Saturday 17), and supporters are welcome to come and cheer him on from 6pm to 7pm Saturday, and from 8am onwards on Sunday.
Best of luck, Steve!
