Dusk hadn’t yet fallen at the 24 Hours of Spa when the safety car was called out for the fifth time in quick succession…
The previous incidents had mostly involved hair-raising crashes at the notorious Eau Rouge/Raidillon complex, and resulted in two British drivers being taken to hospital for precautionary tests. The subsequent crash at Stavelot between two Ferrari 458s resulted in a race stoppage under red flags, as fellow Brit Marcus Mahy was freed from his shattered wreck of a car and airlifted to hospital. (Latest reports have Marcus making ‘good progress’ after a neck operation.)
So good fortune (we might say!) generally prevailed, but the opening period of the race must have been salutory for the ‘gentleman driver’ brigade who formed the backbone of the 65 car entry in the Blancpain GT series event at Spa.
Still, the sight and sound of 65 ‘supercars’ battling it out at one of the world’s iconic racing circuits is an unmissable spectacle – and all you need is an hour to watch it, thanks to this terrific highlights package just uploaded by the race organisers.
