Of all our popular ‘How to Drive …’ videos, this one marks a watershed, because for the very first time we were in the car at the time when it was filmed! What’s more, the pilot in question was none other than the remarkable Allan McNish.
The man’s record of three victories at Le Mans, four at the Sebring 12 Hours, four American Le Mans Series championships and a career of testing and racing in F1 is impressive enough before you consider also that he stood on the podium at Le Mans on six more occasions. We’re talking here about one of the most accomplished and experience drivers of the modern era.
At Portimao recently when GRR got its grubby mitts on the new Audi R8 plus, McNish was on hand offering passenger rides in an R8 LMS GT3 to those brave enough to sample the car’s prodigious braking effort whilst plunging downhill dramatically for some of the Circuito do Algarve’s infamous curves. I stepped forward and in no time was fastening the HANS device to my crash helmet in anticipation of a passenger ride to remember.
Mr McNish didn’t disappoint …
