Update: Formula E drops China, adds Berlin and Rome double-headers

Updated Thursday 16^th December 2021. The 2022 Formula E calendar continues to evolve, with the historically long season chopping and changing as the New Year looms. The biggest change is the loss of China, which will no longer host a round on the weekend of the 19^th of March.

A location for the Chinese E Prix was yet to be decided, with Shanghai, Shenzhen and Chengdu under consideration alongside the most likely Sanya return. Alas, none will be the case, at least not until 2023 at the earliest. March has been pretty well cleared of Fomula E with the loss of China, in addition to the scrapping of the 5^th March date, for which a country and city had yet to be decided.

Elsewhere on the schedule, no weekends have been chopped and changed. Instead, Berlin and Rome have been bumped to double-header status. The Rome E Prix will take place over 9^th-10^th April, while the Berlin E Prix will take place over 14^th-15^th April, with both events sandwiching the 30^th April Monte Carlo E Prix, which is to become an annual fixture. Overall, the eighth season of Formula E will still be comprised of 16 races, with six double-headers.

When is the first Formula E race in 2022?

The first Formula E race in 2022 is on the 28^th of January in Ryadh, Saudi Arabia. The Diriyah ePrix was first introduced in the 2018/2019 season of Formula E. A total of five Formula E races have taken place in Riyadh, with the sixth and seventh to be held at the beginning of the 2021/2022 season.

How many Formula E races will there be in 2022?

There will be 16 races in 12 locations during the 2021/2022 Formula E season. This follows a 15-race, nine-location season in 2021 and the five-location season in 2020, which was cut short from 12 locations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Who won the Formula E championship in 2021?

Nyck de Vries won the 2021 drivers’ championship, with his Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team taking the teams’ championship. It was a close finish, with four other drivers coming within ten points of de Vries’ 99-point finishing tally. Eighth in the closing Berlin ePrix might not have secured his victory, if not for the retirement of all three of his immediate points rivals in the championship standings.

How many Formula E teams are there?

With Audi and BMW departing for the 2022 season, 11 teams of two drivers will be contesting the championship. Among them remain five OEM manufacturers, including Jaguar, Porsche, DS, Mercedes and Nissan.
