We don’t doubt for one moment that the new Mercedes-AMG ‘177’ twin-turbo V8 – as found in the AMG GT – will be a force to be reckoned with. However the following for its big-capacity atmospheric ‘M156’ predecessor is such that many an enthusiast entered a mourning period when it became clear it was to be dropped.
Good news! The sports in Stuttgart have intimated that you will still be able to get your hands on their naturally-aspirated masterpiece until the spring of 2015 under the bonnet of the also-outgoing C63 AMG Coupe. We have a hunch that these cars will be sold relatively quickly, because as good as the new twin-turbo motor will be there’s always something special about a whopping great big V8 engine breathing non-compressed air.
The death of the big-capacity V8 engine has been on the cards for a while now, of course, but that doesn’t make its passing any easier. Perhaps we’ll get hold of one of the final few M156 engined C63 Coupes for a last hurrah.
Goodwood to Suzuka should do the trick!
