Although classed as a concept car, the Holden Efijy is surely more of a retro design excercise? A concept car is usually a car made to showcase new styling and/or new technology, whereas the Efijy was an open homage to the mid-Fifties Holden FJ. The underpinnings were from the Chevrolet Corvette and the supercharged 6.0-litre V8 was based on the lump from ‘America’s Sports Car’ too. Good news, sure, but hardly new technology.
With all that business out of the way though we can focus on what’s important about the Holden Efijy, which is that it must surely be one of the most striking concept car designs ever. Certainly, it is one of the most beautiful things to come out of Australia on four wheels. The ultimate accolade being that in 2007 it was voted Concept car of the Year for 2007 … in America!
Supposedly a long-held dream of Holden Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo, the Efijy was first sketched back in 1989. It was developed as a ‘collaboration with suppliers’ which relieved what would have otherwise been quite a strain on Holden’s resources, which at the time were being employed to develop the 2006 Commodore. It was based on the (then) new Corvette C6 platform, albeit with air-adjustable dampers and a supercharged version of GM’s LS2 V8 which served-up a very healthy 644bhp.
With ample ‘go’ to match the ‘show’, the Efijy appealed to hot rod and custom car fans who might not otherwise get excited by a concept car. We don’t know what the car weighed, but we do know that the body was made from glassfibre. As such and with 644bhp in a Corvette frame it could probably cover ground at an indecent rate for something so big.
Clearly it was never intended for production, but what a thing it was. Since Mr Ferlazzo is now GM Australia’s Design Director, it’s about time he cast-off the fetters of designing contemporary Holdens and once again showed us what he can do …
