The Continental GT has been on the market – and generally evolved – since 2003, but only now has the Crewe company decided to launch a hardcore performance version of the grand tourer. OK, we’ve seen quick versions before: the GT Speed and Supersports were both performance-focused, but the GT3-R is described by Bentley as the most dynamic Bentley of all time. It’s also the most accelerative with a 0-62mph time of 3.8sec. This time, it’s serious.
It will make its debut at the Festival of Speed.
It’s the GT3 race car that has warmed up the market for a scorching version of the Continental GT. The racers won the second round of the Blancpain Endurance Series at Silverstone earlier this year. Like the racer, the GT3-R uses a V8 engine (as opposed to the 12-cylinder engines used by previous performance versions of the car), tuned to produce 572bhp and 516lb ft of torque. We’re liking the sound of this Conti already.
The chassis is tuned for cornering prowess, and the electronic stability control has also been retuned. Deleting the back seats has helped towards a 100kg weight saving compared to the GT V8S. There’s a torque vectoring differential at the rear, and four-wheel drive (as opposed to the racer’s rear-wheel drive).
A fixed rear wing and other bodywork mods signify the GT3-R to onlookers, while occupants also get to enjoy supportive seats and swathes of carbon fibre. Only 300 will be built, so catch sight of this exclusive newcomer while you can at Goodwood…
