Originally introduced in 1989 to launch the then-new Lexus brand into key export markets, such as the USA and Europe, the full-size LS model range (initially badged as the Toyota Celsior in its domestic Japanese market) has been a permanent fixture at the chief model in the Lexus range, rivalling top-line models such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse, BMW 7-Series and Jaguar XJ.

Like the previous four generations of LS models, the new top-end Lexus is believed to use a V8 power plant, this time featuring hybrid technology, to develop around 535 bhp, coupled with ultra-low emissions.
