Retromobile: Happy birthday Citroen DS! Well, almost ...

The enigma that is the Citroën DS is sixty years old this year. The exact anniversary is in October, but this is Retromobile in Paris after all, so we can forgive the party-loving French jumping the gun just a tad, can’t we?

Fittingly the original launch was in Paris at the motor show, and according to the DS club members I chatted to in my broken (shattered?) French, Citroën received 743 orders before the show was 20 minutes old.

The clamour was understandable; not only did it look like something that had fallen to earth, but front-wheel-drive was still something of a novelty at the time, disc brakes on a mass-produced car were unheard of, and then there was that hydropneumatic ride …

To celebrate, various French Citroën clubs huddled together near the middle of the hall and brought with them not just DSs and ID19s, but Maserati-engined SMs and GSs as a celebration of all-things hydropeumatically-suspended. There’s even a rare, majestic, DS Usine Convertible on display. You can’t help but get swept up in the Frenchness of it all.

Immerse yourself in Citroën’s world of magic-carpet rides and other-worldly styling. ‘For the majority of DS club members, it is a case of driving one of these cars or nothing,’ one club member opines to rapturous applause from the other inhabitants of the DS stand, followed by a clinking of champagne glasses.

Cool cars and good times! I just hope none of them are driving home …

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the fabulous DS in our own small way, so we travelled to Retromobile in an extremely luxuriously-appointed DS5 courtesy of our friends at Citroën. You can read more about our exploits with the new DS5 here on GRR soon…
