Any LaFerrari is one of the most incredible cars ever made, but there is one that’s more special than most. It’s the last one made. It’s the car donated by Ferrari to help Italian earthquake victims. And it’s for sale.
You will have to move fast though because this final and 500th example of the fastest Ferrari ever made will be star lot in the RM Sotheby’s sale at Daytona International Speedway in Florida on Saturday, December 3rd.
You will also need deep pockets. No price guide is given for the car but potential bidders should be aware that a LaFerrari sold in the US for US$4.7 million in the summer, what is believed to be a record price for the hybrid hypercar.
That car was pre-owned – even though it had covered just 200 miles – while the auction LaFerrari is fresh from the factory. As RM Sotheby’s says, “the sale presents an unexpected opportunity for collectors to acquire a LaFerrari coupé from new. The auction will be a historic event.”
The 217mph, 950bhp LaFerrari cost around £1 million when new but it was all rather academic since they all sold out as soon as they were announced. Since 2014 few cars have changed hands.
Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne announced in August that one additional LaFerrari coupe would be made – the 500th example of a run that originally was going to end at 499 coupes (plus the open Aperta version just announced). The extra car would be sold in a charity auction with all proceeds going to helping reconstruction of the central Italian region devastated by the earthquakes of 2016. It was Ferrari’s gift to the nation.
RM Sotheby’s CEO Rob Myers says: “It is an honour to be entrusted with the sale of this important car and to help raise significant funds for a desperate cause. The earthquakes which struck central Italy this year devastated the lives of thousands of people, and the money raised by the sale of this LaFerrari could not be put to a better use. The generosity of Ferrari SpA will change lives in the areas most affected by the natural disaster.”
RM Sotheby’s currently holds four of the top 10 records for the most valuable Ferraris sold at auction. The auction house has worked closely with Ferrari before, including on the auctions held at the Ferrari factory in Maranello between 2007-2009.
The car on offer on Saturday boasts a one-of-a-kind livery and interior with a plaque to commemorate its unique place in Ferrari’s history. It is being sold in the auction as part of Ferrari Finali Mondiali weekend at the Daytona Speedway. The weekend – the first time it has been held in the US – promises to be a feast of Ferrari action, featuring not just the culmination of the Ferrari Challenge on the famous banked circuit but also demos by the Ferrari F1 team, a Ferrari Classiche Concours d'Elegance and a huge parade open to all Ferrari owners in the US.
