Here’s the first of the new-generation Mercedes E-class models to arrive with an AMG badge on its boot. It has a ’43’ rather than ’63’ number in that badge but it still boasts 401hp and 0-62mph in a brisk 4.6 seconds.
’43’ models are now popping up across the Mercedes-AMG range and this one is as expected, with a twin turbo 3.0-litre V6 and 4Matic all-wheel drive system set up for a 69 per cent rear torque split to ensure a sporty feel to the handling. The V6 gets bigger turbos for its extra power over other 43 models.
The car follows the Mercedes-AMG blueprint for these ‘mid range’ AMG models of a makeover in the design, suspension and interior departments, plus the addition of more driver-centric features and technologies. Standard on the car is Air Body Control suspension, a multi-chamber air spring set-up with lots of different driver modes including a Sport Plus.
The new E-class – find out all you want to know about the hi-tech new four-door here – was launched at the Detroit show in January and cooking models are in showrooms soon; the new hot one makes its debut at the New York Show in a few weeks and goes on sale from September, triggering further expansion of the whole AMG line-up. It is expected to be available as both saloon and estate.
And a successor to the much loved AMG E63? The V8-powered daddy of the range is expected later…
