The results are in from the latest head-to-head in that ever-fascinating hypercar battle between the Ferrari LaFerrari and the McLaren P1. And this time – in the Bonhams saleroom rather than on the racetrack – it’s a win for the Italian car.

P1 and LaFerrari fetch £4,000,000 at Monterey
Both LaFerrari and P1 will get to 100mph in around 5 seconds and top out at over 200mph, but when the gavel rather than the chequered flag drops it’s the Ferrari that’s ahead – by about a million quid.
Bonhams Quail Lodge auction in Carmel during Monterey Auto Week is believed to be the first time the hybrid hypercars, two of the fastest cars money can buy, have been for sale publicly together. Bonhams says the LaFerrari is the first to arrive on the public market full stop.
The 2014 Rosso Corsa (with black trim) Ferrari has covered just 230 miles from new. It is one of 120 LaFerraris delivered to the US market, all of which sold out long ago. “It’s a brand new car to all intents and purposes,” says Bonhams, adding that the car remains on factory warranty and carries no restrictions. It also comes with some tasty options: onboard telemetry, Alcantara seat trim, carbon-fibre dashboard, and Cavallino Rampante stitched into the headrests.
“It’s an undeniable future classic,” say the Bonhams motoring gurus, and they should know: Bonhams still holds the world record for the sale of any Ferrari with the 1962 250 GTO sold at Quail Lodge in 2014.
Lined up against the Ferrari at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club on 19 August was the McLaren P1, also from 2014 and also boasting nine-hundred-and-something horsepower. Number 90 of 375 cars made, it is one of the few P1s finished in McLaren Orange. Delivered new to a Pennsylvania-based enthusiast, the car has covered just 1200 miles.
The P1 comes with factory-delivered accessories including custom-built model of the car, carbon-fibre key box with the spare key, tools and books, leather binder with plaque, and fire extinguisher. The car has also been signed by McLaren chief designer Frank Stephenson.
Says Bonhams: “The P1 is arguably the ultimate supercar of today and possibly tomorrow. Very few occasions come up to acquire a P1 today.”
So to the results…
The McLaren sold for US$2,090,000 (£1,585,056) including premium.
And the LaFerrari went for US$3,685,000 (£2,794,704) including premium.
Bonhams next sale is at Revival on 10 September starting at 11.00 – preview coming soon on GRR.
